[FOOTNOTE: **The Spirit of Hiroshima: An Introduction to the Atomic Bomb Tragedy (Pub.: 1999; Hiroshima: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum).]

Although Nagasaki was a major munitions center, Mitsubishi’s production facilities were beneath the city of Nagasaki in underground lead-lined bunkers and remained undamaged. There were well over 2,500 young ladies employed in the underground who survived the deployment of America’s most powerful weapon without any awareness that an atomic attack had occurred overhead. Undeterred, the Japanese war machine continued with the on site full-scale assembly of long-range KI-77 bombers, known as “Patsy’s”, which were capable of reaching New York City from Tokyo. It was concluded (correctly) that any atomic attack on the Japanese national capital of Tokyo would leave the Imperial Bunker(s) equally unscathed.

While there is considerably more intrigue surrounding the so-called end of the war in the summer of 1945, and that includes Japan’s possession of nuclear weapons, the purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate beyond any shadow of a doubt how much the Office of War Information has lied to and misled the public. I will offer additional information on atomic weapons in subsequent chapters, but next, I will address the Japanese response to the bombs dropped by the Americans on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
